The Divine Purpose of ISKCON in Krishna Consciousness
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), widely revered as the Hare Krishna Movement, is a transcendental society established by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada in July 1966 in New York. Its sacred mission is to spread Krishna-bhakti (devotional service to Krishna) and uplift conditioned souls from the bondage of material existence.
ISKCON follows the pure teachings of the Vedas and Vedic scriptures, especially the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam, which reveal the path of Vaishnavism—pure devotional surrender to the Supreme Lord Sri Krishna, the eternal Lord of Sri Radha. This parampara (disciplic succession) originates from Lord Krishna Himself, flowing through Sri Vyasadeva, Srila Madhvacharya, Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and continuing today through Srila Prabhupada and his exalted followers.
ISKCON upholds Sanatana Dharma—the eternal occupation of the soul—which is loving devotional service (Bhakti-yoga) to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, Lord Krishna. This universal path of Krishna Consciousness transcends sectarian limitations, guiding all souls toward the supreme goal of life—Krishna-prema (pure love for Krishna).
The divine aim of ISKCON is to awaken Krishna consciousness in all living beings, allowing them to realize their eternal identity as Krishna’s servants and attain supreme bliss, peace, and liberation. The Vedic scriptures declare that in the dark age of Kali-yuga, the most potent and merciful means of self-realization is the constant remembrance, glorification, and chanting of the Supreme Lord’s Holy Names.
Thus, ISKCON wholeheartedly propagates the congregational chanting of the Maha-mantra:
Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare
Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare
This transcendental vibration is non-different from Krishna Himself and directly connects the soul to the Supreme Lord through His divine sound incarnation. By chanting with faith, surrender, and devotion, one can purify the heart, transcend material bondage, and ultimately return to the eternal abode of Sri Krishna in Goloka Vrindavan.
